August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day, a time to celebrate the special older people in your life and their many contributions. We have ideas on how you can celebrate this day, and bring joy to your favorite senior and others in the community.

What is National Senior Citizens Day?

President Ronald Regan created National Senior Citizens Day more than three decades ago. He signed Proclamation 5847, and designated August 21 as a day to celebrate older people across our nation.

“For all that, they have achieved throughout their lives and for all that they continue to do, we owe our gratitude and sincere greetings to our senior citizens. We can show our gratitude and appreciation better by making sure our communities are good places. Places where older people can participate as much as possible and find the encouragement, acceptance, support and services they need to continue living a life of independence and dignity.”

Plan Something Fun!

This special day is a great time to plan something your loved one likes to do. Whether it be bowling, going to a movie, hiking, shopping, or making their favorite recipe, they will be grateful you planned a special day just for them.

Volunteer

Think about volunteering at an organization that is dedicated to helping older adults, such as a Senior Living community, a local resource center, or other places that serve seniors. Even if you don’t have much time to volunteer, your contributions will make a big difference in the lives of the people who utilize these services.
