Home Care or Assisted Living? What’s the Difference?

For many seniors, there comes a time in their later years when they are no longer able to be as independent as they once were, especially in the areas of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). These activities include bathing, eating, dressing, using the restroom, or moving about. While it is clear that some older adults will need help in these areas, knowing exactly the right kind of assistance for family members to provide can be confusing.

In this blog, we will discuss two care types; Home Care and Assisted Living and how they differ to meet the specific needs of those who utilize them.

What is Home Care?

Senior Home Care is designed for those who are able to safely stay in their homes, but need extra assistance with not only the Activities of Daily Living, but also light housecleaning, laundry or errand running. Home care has a wide range of service options for seniors, including care from a few hours a week to 24/7 assistance

With Home Care, services are less expensive than community settings and seniors get to remain in the comfort of their own home. It is important to remember, however, that Home Care may not be the best solution for an older adult, particularly if their safety could still be in jeopardy or they need care that goes beyond what Home Care offers.

What is Assisted Living?

Assisted Living Communities are specifically designed to help their residents live more independently by providing assistance with Activities of Daily Living, such as eating, dressing, bathing, using the rest room, and moving about. In addition, Assisted Living Communities provide other convenience services such as laundry, housekeeping, and transportation.

Another great benefit of Assisted Living is the food provided to residents. These communities offer a wide range of nutritious meals and snacks prepared by a chef and professional kitchen staff. Dietitians are utilized to ensure that meals are meeting the nutritional needs of residents. For those who have special dietary requirements due to illness or other reasons, arrangements can be made to prepare special meals as well.

Access to a wide range of activities and events is also a highlight of residing in an Assisted Living Community. Activities such as book club, movie nights, exercise classes, welcome committee, baking and cooking classes, gardening, and health and wellness all allow residents to enjoy each other’s company.
